High-Profile Partnerships and an Exciting Array of Licensed Products to Further Catapult Animated Icon Into the Spotlight

 Well, blow me down! Popeye the Sailor Man celebrates his 75th Anniversary in 2004!

Headlining the campaign will be an all-new Popeye primetime TV special and deluxe DVD release – Popeye’s Voyage: The Quest for Pappy – that will for the first time present the foremost sailor man and the other enduring characters in a stunning, three-dimensional CGI (computer-generated imagery) format. The special, co-written by actor/comedian and huge Popeye fan Paul Reiser (“Mad About You”), will feature the voices of Academy Award® winner Kathy Bates (“Misery,” “Titanic”) as Popeye’s notorious nemesis Sea Hag/Siren and acclaimed voice artist Billy West (M&M’s Red M&M, “Ren & Stimpy,” Elmer Fudd in “Looney Tunes: Back In Action”) as the mighty mariner. Popeye’s Voyage: The Quest for Pappy will be released on a special-edition DVD by Lion’s Gate Home Entertainment’s Family Home Entertainment (FHE) on November 9 and nationally televised on the FOX Television Network during the 2004 holiday season.

Helping to maximize Popeye’s retail presence in the United States, more than 50 licensees will launch innovative lines of official Popeye products throughout the year. These products will receive support through King Features’ extensive promotional activities for the Popeye franchise. The celebratory events kicked off January 16-18, 2004, when the world-famous Empire State Building saluted the animated hero by illuminating its tower lights green from sunset to midnight each night, as a tribute to the sailor’s enormous love of spinach. Several additional initiatives will help ensure Popeye’s continued exposure to millions of consumers on a regular basis, including a unique motor sports partnership with co-branded Popeye/Dodge cars competing in a nationally televised NASCAR® race; a partnership with Weight Watchers’ promoting the health benefits of Spinach as the Weight Watchers “Pick of the Season” in May and June; and Popeye’s 75th Anniversary Salute during Fleet Week at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City, including the Sailor Man’s appearances at various fun-filled family activities and support of the United States Power Squadrons Safe Boating Campaign during National Safe Boating Week.


Popeye and all of his renowned friends and foes will set sail into adventure this holiday season as the all-new CGI animation, Popeye’s Voyage: The Quest for Pappy, makes its debut in Lion’s Gate Home Entertainment’s Family Home Entertainment (FHE) premiere of the deluxe special edition DVD and VHS on November 9. The DVD edition will include an extended version of the special, classic Popeye material and other bonus features. To support the release, FHE is planning an extensive broadcast and print advertising blitz and promotional program that will generate tens of millions consumer impressions. Additionally, the all-new CGI animated special will air in primetime on the FOX Television Network. FOX is expected to launch a major on-air campaign to drive tune-in to this exciting special event.
