SelfMade Hero, an award-winning, independent, British graphic novel publishing house launched the very first Popeye cookbook , “I Y’Am What I Y’Am, and You Are What You Eat’” fully illustrated with Popeye artwork and comic strips, in their Fall 2011 collection. Well-known cookbook author Josephine Bacon created healthy takes on some all-American classics, vegetarian dinners, health snacks, special smoothies and seaside suppers.
Like any modern woman, Popeye’s Sweet patootie Olive Oyl had her own career for ages, as a model and fashionista. Now she’s lent her star power to iconic Irish dairy brand Kerrygold to promote their brand of butter and olive oil spread. Prints ads broke in the UK Daily Express, The Telegraph, Sunday Mirror Celebs supplement, Reader’s Digest, BBC Good Food, BBC Olive and Sainsbury’s magazines.
King Features concluded a deal with fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana for a Popeye apparel collection for Spring/Summer 2012 under the D&G brand. T-shirts, sweatshirt and tank tops for adults and kids will be available in boutiques and high-end department stores worldwide from March 2012. D&G joins a high-profile list of fashion licensees and retailers who have carried Popeye including Benetton, Bloomingdale’s, Gap, H & M, Miss Sixty and Zara.
