A newspaper arts & entertainment editor in California who was writing a story about the Sailor Man, his creator, Elzie Crisler Segar, and the history of the character contacted us here at King Features for assistance with background information, interviews and artwork. Did you know that there exists a very special history between Popeye and PEZ candy? PEZ began making dispensers in the 1940s, and they were originally very plain and intended for adults who were trying to quit smoking.
Throughout the 1950s, PEZ introduced a number of more playful designs intended for children. In 1958, PEZ introduced the very first PEZ dispenser featuring a popular licensed character. If you guessed it was Popeye, you would be correct!
The 34th Annual Popeye Picnic will take place this weekend, Sept. 6 – 8, 2013, in Chester, Illinois. Each year, this highly anticipated town event and Popeye-themed picnic takes place on the first full weekend after Labor Day in the hometown of Elzie Segar, creator of THIMBLE THEATER and the creative genius behind Popeye.
